The most important things you need to understand when you are helping other people is.
- Are you making a difference?
Are you really making a difference in their life, is what you are doing helping them? Or is this person using you as a crutch and trying to get pity from you? There are a lot of people that do not want to change, and they will not do what they should when other people pity them because this is all they want is to be pitied.
You must have the discernment to know if they are using you so they can stay in the place they are. If someone does not do anything to help themselves, they are looking for a free ride, and it is time for you to walk away.
I understand that some people are not emotionally ready to move forward; however if they stay stuck for a long time the best thing you can do is to back away until they decide it is time to move forward.
- Why are you doing it?
You need to ask yourself why are you helping this person, or anyone else, are you doing this because you need to be needed? Do you need to have someone depend on you? Does it make you feel important when other people need you? These are very important questions that only you can answer.
It is good to help people, the real question is why are, “you” helping them?
The problem comes when you are doing it to make yourself feel important or worthy by helping others. If you base your self-worth on how much you are helping other people than you have a problem.
Your self-worth must to be on the facts of who you are and not on your ability to do something or help someone. If you are not secure in who you are, naked and alone, than you will always be looking for something to fill that void in your life.
If you are helping people because you need them to need you, you will never do what they need to help them be set free, because if you get them to be free they will not need you anymore.
- Spend your time wisely.
We are all given 24 hours per day and the length of our days is numbered. We always need to remember that time is the most precious resource that God has given us. The time we spend doing anything is gone forever, and we can never get it back. If you lose a $100 you can work and earn it back again.
When you give or invest your time into anything or anyone it is gone forever. No matter how much money you have, you cannot buy back the time you wasted. You can redeem the time you lost by working harder to utilize your present time more wisely.
It is very important to take time each day and look at what and where we are investing or wasting our time, so we can readjust and use our time and our life in the best way possible.
I believe that everyone should be giving something to someone that cannot give anything in return. And at the same time we must be wise in what and how we give.
If our self-worth is based on anything other than, being a child of God, to our Heavenly Father. We will struggle to find purpose and peace.
